The partnership supports preclinical to clinical research projects aimed at identifying disease mechanisms and biological targets with potential to become successful and commercially viable treatments in areas of high unmet medical need. |

Use of Fluorescence Microscopy in the Microcirculation Use of fluorescence microscopy in the microcirculation. In the initial part of the movie, the cheek pouch microcirculation is observed at relatively low magnification in bright-field microscopy, and capillaries and small vessels are difficult to visualize. The field then goes to black when the illumination is switched to epi-fluorescence, and then fluorescein-conjugated to albumin is injected at the time indicated. Note that is requires almost 20 seconds for the dye to circulate from femoral vein through the lungs, the aorta and feed artery to the cheek pouch. Once in the cheek pouch microvessels the flow of plasma can be easily visualized. |

Arteriolar Branch Point in the Cheek Pouch of a Golden Hamster (approx. 1000x) High magnification movie (approx. 1000x) of an arteriolar branch point in the cheek pouch of a golden hamster. The vessel running horizontally was about 25 um in diameter, and the small vertical branch about 10 um. The later is termed a "terminal arteriole". Note red and white cells passing into the terminal arteriole, and the individual smooth muscle cells that can be seen in clearly on the surface of the terminal arteriole. |

Vessels were in the cheek pouch of an anesthetized golden hamster. NE and Ado were applied by dripping onto the tissues surface at 10-6 and 10-5 respectively. Note changes in wall thickness and red cell velocity during vasomotor responses. |
